What Is a Normal Heart Rate?

Heart rate is the number of times your heart beats per minute. It varies with age, fitness level, and body state. Regular monitoring helps detect cardiovascular abnormalities early, before symptoms appear.

Reference ranges

Resting heart rate — Normal60–100 bpm
Athletes — Normal low40–60 bpm
Tachycardia — Monitor> 100 bpm at rest
Bradycardia — Attention needed< 40 bpm

* Reference values only. Consult a doctor for personalized advice.

What affects heart rate?

Many factors affect heart rate: stress and anxiety typically raise it; regular exercise lowers resting heart rate (a sign of cardiovascular fitness); caffeine, nicotine, and certain medications also raise it. High ambient temperature, poor sleep, or dehydration can temporarily elevate heart rate.

When is heart rate concerning?

A resting heart rate consistently above 100 bpm (tachycardia) or below 40 bpm (bradycardia) without being a trained athlete warrants medical evaluation. If your heart rate spikes suddenly with shortness of breath, chest pain, or dizziness, seek medical attention immediately.

Why monitor heart rate continuously?

A clinic reading only captures one moment — it does not reflect your heart rate across the full day and night. Continuous 24/7 monitoring detects anomalies that occur at night or during rest when you are unaware. Weekly and monthly trends also reveal how well your body recovers from exercise or periods of stress.
